Sluggish Magazine
Sluggish Magazine is a literary publication created in response to the pandemic. It was developed as a way to explore the sense of being stuck or slowed down, both physically and emotionally. The name reflects that feeling of life grinding to a halt beyond our control but also suggests a choice to slow down and take time to reflect and be sluggish. It is a submissions based magazine of art and literature, two things that were invaluable as past-times during the lockdowns.
“Sluggish Magazine is a literary magazine celebrating new writing. Voicing new authors, the publication aims to embrace communication, storytelling and the importance of reading amongst young people.”
I was asked to work on the cover art for the magazine and to create a series of animated social media posts for Instagram. The aim for both was to reflect the brand identity through colour and tone, selecting colours that complemented the existing palette and created a calm, welcoming atmosphere.
The animations were created in Procreate using frame-by-frame techniques to give them a gentle, handcrafted quality that suited the reflective nature of the publication.
I also assisted in the typeface selection, working with the editor to select the font Freight, and supported with typesetting throughout the magazine.
